Research topic:  Substance Abuse (Children and Adults)

Learning outcomes:   

  • Students should be able to define different types of authority such as subject expertise, society position, or special experience.
  • Use markers of authority to determine the credibility of sources
  • Recognize that authoritative content may be packaged formally or informally and may include audio visuals and non print sources.

 Materials needed

1.  Internet, books and academic journals

Learning activities 

1 Activity  -   Different types of authority - The class will be divided into two groups, given different topics "substance abuse in children", and substance abuse in adults".  Students will be required not to only rely in books and internet but also to have talks with the people that have information on the topic (special experience),  and they must be able to to defined different types of authority they used and why do they think the chosen ones are the best for their research.

2.  Activity -   Credibility of sources - The students of 8 will be given the same topic, divided into two groups to check the credibility of all sources they used .  The students will be asked to determine the reliability of the source, authority, currency and the purpose (what is the author trying to reveal, is the information facts or the author uses his or her opinion).  The students will brainstorm on how they think the sources is credible or not based on their findings.

3.  Activity - Authoritative content may be in different formats - The class will be divided, one group will will search for information formally and informally, the others will search on print and non-print source.  Students will compare and share the challenges and their preference with a motivation.




Activity 1 -  will help the students to identify how authorities layout or addresses the information and what are the differences

Activity 2 - Knowledge of different authorities, who are they and what do they do and better understanding of why the information has been created.  There are so many educational books, some of them are  outdated or have been replaced, misprinted or out of context with the internet everyone can publish anything, people can voice out their opinion.   The activity 2 will assist students to overcome those challenges.

Activity 3 -  Students will learn that information can be found everywhere as long the information sources they use are credible.
