Class 2:  15 August

Learning theories

Hi colleagues I am going to talk about learning theories that we have discussed on the 15 August, your opinions, corrections and comments is be much appreciated incase my understanding is wrong.

Theory is a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained

Learning theory is a conceptual framework describing how knowledge is absorbed, processed and retained during learning

Below are the learning theories:

BEHAVIORISM

Behaviourism - is a worldview that assumes al learner is essentially passive, responding to environmental stimuli.  I will make an example of this theory in public library environment in getting a child to read.  The teacher-librarian will have to make reading exciting, motivate, encourage and reward with a gold star (stimuli) each time a learner finished a book.

The learner starts off as a clean slate and behavior is shape through positive reinforcement of negative reinforcement .

Positive reinforcement - positive reinforcement is based on reward. Based on the  above example the reward will be clapping hands and words of encouragement when the learner is getting a gold star then the child will put an effort.

Negative reinforcement - This occurs when stimulus is removed after a particular behavior is exhibited.  In the library environment, the learner will be allowed to play games on smartcape computers  after reading a chapter.

CONSTRUCTIVIST

Constructivists are more likely to allow for experimentation and exploration in the classroom and place a greater emphasis on the experience of the learner.  In this theory learners are allowed to debate, share their experiences.  The lecture assist the learners to progress to be independent in the learning process.

To relate in this theory, we  use it a lot  in class for example when the subject is about teaching or libraries Ms Mohamed would ask either the educator or librarian in the class to comment or share experiences, and the other example she also mentioned in class is "scaffolding", to assist students to progress by sending the draft of the assignment before submitting.
